I love superhero movies but I understand the exhaustion going on right now. Hollywood has leveraged such a lucrative formula that some of us are a little influenced by the genre. I feel the genre still has a lot to offer because the best films have found a way to recreate. I also feel there are some hidden gems that are delayed in excessive saturation.
Here are 5 superhero movies that I feel are lacking.
1. Death of Superman (HBO Max)
This is one of the best DC movies of all time and happens to be animated. This story doesn’t try to do too much which I think is the downfall of another DC movie. The animation is also ideal for telling a story without the need for and using excessive special effects and CGI. I also love that the title and the poster have spoilers because you know just by reading this movie. Superman and the Justice League meet their final match in the form of an unstoppable alien that crashes the earth and wreaks havoc. This remains true for comics with some major plot changes. But don’t let the animation stop you from watching … this is well done, so that you will forget that you are watching an animated movie.
2. The Extraordinary Hulk (2008)
It’s embarrassing Incredible Hulk the film has not been well received by the audience. He is a great character and is loved at Avengers but for some reason his solo film did not appear as well. I think Edward Norton did a great job of bringing Bruce Banner to life in the 2008 film. That was a huge success Iron Man is the first time “The Avengers” is referred to in a movie. Don’t watch 2003 Hulk… no one needs to see it.
3. Super (2010)
Have you ever wanted to see Rainn Wilson from the Office as a superhero? Then this is the movie for you. After his wife left him, he decided to transform himself into a costume supervisor. He’s just an ordinary guy who isn’t ready to bear the damage he’s done. It also features great cast from Rainn Wilson, Elliot Page, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon. This is my favorite movie by director James Gunn who also once did it Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy.
4. Kick Ass (2010)
It’s a story about a kid who loves superheroes so much that he wants to be one – despite not having super powers. He collaborated with some unsuitable overseers to fight crime against the violent masses. I love the world in which this movie exists. Her costume design is great and feels like it’s ahead of the R rating because of the violence and language. The sequel is also good.
5. Hancock (2008)
Will Smith’s character is an alcoholic superhero. Although he saved people in LA, he did not have the best reputation and was hated by the public for his drunken and careless actions. The film shows what the consequences are for the actions and damage of the superhero collateral. You also have Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman alongside Will Smith. The film isn’t perfect, but I love that the film takes on a different genre. I think it came out at the wrong time as we see it now with success Boys on Amazon. I still want to see the sequel.
